I think a lot about how happy I am riding my bike and the many benefits cycling brings to my life. I also think a lot about how, for some, a bike may be the only transportation they have for getting to a job, healthcare facility, or school. Providing bicycles to people in need in developing countries is why X-BodyTech chose World Bicycle Relief (WBR) as one of our foundations to support. Below provides some background on why we wanted to support WBR.
During a recent conversation with Claire Geiger, US Partnership and Fundraising Manager for WBR and an avid cyclist, she described to me that for many people in developing countries, walking is their primary mode of transportation. Add the challenge of distance and seemingly simple tasks of going to school, visiting the clinic, or delivering goods to market become difficult and sometimes impossible. With no choice but to walk, meeting everyday needs is a struggle against time and fatigue.
In response to this need, World Bicycle Relief builds and distributes specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles to students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs through study-to-own and work-to-own programs. These bikes are known as Buffalo Bicycles. For increased sustainability, they train field mechanics to ensure access to maintenance and spare parts.
Buffalo Bicycles are designed, sourced and manufactured for durability and affordability and engineered specifically for rural terrain and heavy loads. As Claire commented to me, “for less than the cost of a helmet or cycling shoes, $147 donated to WBR provides a sturdy, sustainable, and easy to maintain Buffalo bike." To date, WBR has donated over 400,000 Buffalo Bicycles in developing countries, which translates to the following numbers:
World Bicycle Relief is currently working to provide bicycles to students (70% girls), teachers, and educational workers in rural parts of Africa. For $147, WBR can provide a Buffalo Bicycle to a student in need.
We also encourage you to visit our shop and purchase for a cause. We currently offer a variety of high performance wheel sets for road, gravel or mountain bikes, t-shirts and other bike accessaries.
